California Thai Statement Mural

Environmental Graphic / Food Court Art

Spring 2026

Food courts are highly competitive, visually saturated environments. The client, California Thai’s franchise owner, needed a massive 9’ x 10’ statement wall to capture foot traffic and anchor their newly renovated service counter at this initial location. Working closely with the client and the project's interior designer, the goal was to create a modern, energetic focal point that communicated the authenticity of Thai cuisine - evolving their previous wall graphic into a vibrant, scalable centerpiece designed to become the standard brand art across all future franchise locations.

The Concept & Creative Direction
During the conceptual phase, I suggested and explored 2 distinct narrative directions. The first focused on the soul of Thailand, representing the transition from ancient, lush northern landscapes to iconic southern coastal beauty. The second direction leaned into the urban street energy of Bangkok, utilizing a kaleidoscopic, cubist style to convey a fast-paced "flavour trail".
The client resonated with the natural landscape approach but wanted to ensure the mural felt high-energy and appetizing.

The Execution & Brand Integration
To achieve a modern look that bridged the gap between organic nature and architectural structure, I utilized a crisp, low-poly vector aesthetic. This geometric style provided a clean contrast to the organic subject matter, ensuring the mural felt edgy and contemporary rather than folksy.
As per the client's specific request, the final composition serves as a visual "pre-harvest," subtly weaving in key ingredients used in their dishes - such as mangoes, hot peppers, limes, and a coconut palm - into the lush foreground canopy.

At the centre of the composition is a warm, sun-drenched orange elephant, inspired by the one the restaurant currently uses in their communication materials. By using high-contrast, vibrant hues (warm oranges, reds, and pinks) against the brand’s signature California Thai greens, the elephant acts as a "Guardian of Flavour," popping through the harsh overhead food court lighting to stimulate appetite and draw the viewer's eye toward the distant, iconic limestone karsts of the background landscape.

Scalability & Franchise Rollout
Because California Thai plans to feature this statement art across multiple locations, the composition needed to be highly adaptable. I designed the original master artwork at a sprawling panoramic scale (over 12 feet wide) rather than a fixed dimension. By strategically spacing the primary focal points (the elephant, the limestone karsts, and the foreground ingredient clusters) this modular approach ensures the visual narrative remains balanced whether the file is cropped into a tight square for a compact food court stall or extended across a long architectural dining wall.
